starling pecking at the figs
was screaming his head off
scaring the other martins away
on a post we placed
an owl made of plastic
but the starling was never afraid
i leaned up against
an english dogwood
and steadied my benjamin aim
one shot was enough
to kill the starling
and end my hunting game
some birds are mean
because they are lonely
they have no song to sing
i lowered my rifle
and i ran to my father
i had never killed anything
my father said
that i'd done well
that it's good to learn the gun
i was just a boy
and i felt so wicked
for killing only for fun
my father showed
no hesitation
he buried that bird in the compost by the garden
and thats how i learned
death is coming
it's the train thats never late
my eyes aren't keen
and my wings they are heavy

both gone to rising seas
hurricane i'm on my knees
O Lord what times are these
i used to fish lacassine with my paw
on his head a hat of straw
in that heat's no fun at all
early morning or wait till fall
in that water dark and cold
those fish turn black and gold
when we're home are stories told
catch big bass and fait do-do
when that storm comes no control

i'd go with sister to rutherford beach
gather shells keep one of each
in those waves bringing peace
search horizons out of reach
when the moon showed its face
sister's son and me we had a race
out came the little crabs they were running all over the place
we were laughing as we gave chase
those little crabs were faster paced

when i was younger i didn't care
i thought i hated everybody there
couldn't see the forest for the trees
and now i know my enemies
the guard blocked the road
I-10 bridge has now been closed
they say it holds no heavy loads
